What seeds actually need

Germination depends on three conditions held steady at the same time. Hydration activates the seed, warmth triggers growth, and airflow lets it respire as the taproot emerges. When any one of them drifts — too dry, too cold, too stagnant — germination slows, turns uneven, or fails outright.

Most methods control one and leave the other two to chance. A paper towel dries out. A plastic bag holds moisture but traps stale air, which is what causes mould and damping-off. A heat mat warms a broad area at a fixed output you can't set. Seed Starter's tools are built to hold all three in range at once, which is why more seeds sprout and sprout evenly.

Which one do you need?

The Heat Pack. is the powered engine behind most of the system, and the silicone chambers are skins that sit on top of it. That's the key thing to understand before choosing:

Through an Australian winter, or with heat-loving seed like chillies and peppers, ambient room temperature won't reliably sit in germination range. Simple enough for a classroom, precise enough for a grow room

Most propagation gear assumes you already know what you're doing. Seed Starter doesn't. There is no reservoir to manage, no medium to mix, no pH to check and nothing to plumb in. You moisten a cotton pad, put a seed on it, close a magnetic lid, and plug in a USB-C cable. That's the whole method.

That makes it genuinely useful in settings that have nothing to do with hydroponics. A classroom can run one on a shelf with a phone charger — no water tray to knock over, no lamp to manage, nothing hot enough to worry about, and a sealed silicone chamber a child can pick up and look into. Because the seed sits between two cotton pads rather than under soil, the taproot emerging is visible from the first day, which is the part that actually holds a class's attention. It's fast, too: held at the right temperature, a suitable seed will often show a taproot within a day or two, where a cup of soil on a windowsill shows nothing for a week and half the cups fail. The same applies to community gardens, aged-care and therapy programmes, and anyone teaching propagation to beginners.

For the experienced grower, the appeal is the opposite end of the same quality. Setting an exact temperature and holding it removes the variable that makes germination inconsistent — no more guessing whether an unheated room dropped out of range overnight, no more patchy results across a batch, and no wondering whether a failed seed was the seed or the conditions. On expensive or difficult genetics, that repeatability is what you're paying for.

FAQ

I'm new to this — which product should I buy first?

The Sprout. + Heat Pack. Kit, in almost every case. It's the only option that includes the Heat Pack., which is the part the rest of the range is built around. The exception is if you specifically want unpowered batch germination, in which case FlexiGerm. is the right starting point.

How much faster is it, really?

Considerably, and that's the whole reason the system exists. Held at the right temperature, growers commonly see a taproot within 24–36 hours on a suitable seed — against 7–21 days for a chilli in ambient conditions, or 5–10 for a tomato. Those long conventional timelines are largely a symptom of unstable warmth: a seed sitting below its ideal temperature overnight isn't growing, it's waiting. Hold it in range continuously and it gets on with it. Results still vary with species and seed freshness.

What's the difference between Sprout. and FlexiGerm.?

Sprout. is one pod with powered, precisely controlled warmth from a Heat Pack. FlexiGerm. is a six-pod tray with no power at all, relying on ambient heat or a mat you supply. Both take multiple seeds per pod — the difference is precision versus volume. Growers doing difficult or expensive seed tend to use Sprout.; growers starting a tray of vegetables each spring tend to use FlexiGerm.

Can one Heat Pack. run more than one skin at a time?

No — one skin at a time. To germinate in parallel, add Heat Pack. units, or use FlexiGerm. for batch work.

Does anything come with a power adapter?

No. Heat Pack. is USB-C powered and needs a wall adapter supplying 5 V at a minimum of 1.5 A, with 20 W or higher recommended. Most modern phone chargers meet that, which is why one isn't included.

Is it suitable for a school or a complete beginner?

Yes — that's one of its strengths. There's no soil, no water reservoir, no nutrients and no lighting to set up. It runs from a USB-C phone charger and the seed is visible through the whole process, which makes it far easier to teach with than a cup of soil where nothing shows for a week.
