Sprout. is the single-pod silicone germination chamber from Seed Starter — the skin that sits on top of a Heat Pack. and turns its warmth into a sealed, humid, breathable environment for your seeds. Moulded from EU food-grade silicone, it insulates the heat rather than letting it escape into the room, holds moisture around the seed without drowning it, and vents passively through airflow grooves in the lid. This listing is the Sprout. skin on its own, for growers who already own a Heat Pack.

Read this first: Sprout. is a silicone skin, not a heater. It has no power of its own and needs a Heat Pack. to work as designed. If you don't already own one, buy the Sprout. + Heat Pack. Kit instead — $159.95 for both, against $169.90 buying them separately. The Heat Pack. in that kit also runs GermiPad., Seed Starter's seedling and cutting platform arriving shortly — it's the part worth owning.

What the silicone actually does

It would be easy to assume the skin is just a container. It isn't — it's doing three jobs that decide whether the seed germinates well.

It insulates. Silicone is thermally insulating, which is why Heat Pack. can hold a set temperature at roughly 1 W. Put the same heater under a plastic tray and most of that warmth leaks into the room. The skin keeps it around the seed, which is what makes the whole system stable and efficient.

It holds humidity without flooding. The sealed chamber keeps the moisture from your cotton pads in the air around the seed. A paper towel on a plate dries out within a day; a zip-lock bag holds moisture but traps it with no exchange. This sits between the two.

It breathes. The signature airflow grooves on the lid allow gentle passive ventilation. Seeds respire as they germinate, and stagnant saturated air is what causes the mould and rot that ruin bag-method attempts. Passive venting is the difference between a humid chamber and a stale one.

Made to be opened and cleaned

Magnets set into both the lid and the base pull the two together, so you can lift the lid, look at the seeds, and snap it back without wrestling a stiff plastic dome or tearing a bag open. The microclimate re-establishes immediately. That sounds minor until you're checking a slow chilli seed daily for three weeks.

The whole skin is dishwasher-safe. That matters more than convenience: damping-off pathogens survive on equipment between runs and are a common reason a second germination goes worse than the first. Being able to properly sanitise the chamber, rather than wiping it out, breaks that cycle. Remove Heat Pack. first, wash the silicone in warm water with mild detergent or run it through the dishwasher, and air dry before reassembly.

FAQ

Do I need a Heat Pack. to use this?

Yes, for the system to work as intended. Sprout. is unpowered — it insulates and contains, but it doesn't generate heat. Without a Heat Pack. underneath, you're relying entirely on room temperature, which is the variable the system exists to remove. If you want a passive, unpowered option by design, FlexiGerm. is built for that instead.

Why would I buy the skin on its own?

Three common reasons: you already own a Heat Pack. and want a second chamber to swap between; your original skin is worn or lost; or you're running multiple Heat Packs. in parallel and need skins to match. If none of those apply, the kit is the better buy.

How many seeds fit in the pod?

More than one — there's no fixed limit. Seeds sit between two moistened cotton pads, so how many you fit depends on seed size and how much room you want each taproot to have. Fewer per pod generally gives better results: crowded seeds compete for moisture and the emerging roots tangle, which makes them awkward to separate for potting on. A handful of small seeds is fine; a few large ones is closer to the sensible limit. For genuinely large batches, FlexiGerm. gives you six pods in one tray.

How fast will seeds germinate in it?

Fast, but only with a Heat Pack. underneath — the speed comes from warmth and the sealed chamber working together, not from the silicone alone. Held at the right temperature, growers commonly see a taproot within 24–36 hours on a suitable seed, against 7–21 days for a chilli in ambient conditions or 5–10 for a tomato. Those long conventional timelines are mostly a symptom of unstable warmth: a seed sitting below its ideal temperature overnight isn't growing, it's waiting. Sprout.'s job is to hold that warmth and humidity around the seed instead of letting it escape. Results vary with species and seed freshness.

What colours are available?

Black lid or orange lid, both on a black body. Purely cosmetic — the two are identical in function.

We want this for a classroom — is the pod on its own enough?

No — without a Heat Pack. underneath it's just an insulated chamber. For teaching, buy the Sprout. + Heat Pack. Kit, which runs off a phone charger and keeps the seed visible throughout, or FlexiGerm. if you'd rather have six pods and no cable at all. For classroom sets, get in touch.

How do I clean it?

Take Heat Pack. out first — it's an electronic component and must not go in water. Then wash the silicone with warm water and mild detergent, or put it in the dishwasher. Air dry fully before reassembling.
